AWS and Azure are turning multicloud networking into a managed service

For years, connecting AWS and Azure privately meant coordinating circuits, routers, routing policies, encryption, monitoring, and two separate providers.

That is starting to change.

AWS and Microsoft have introduced interoperable multicloud connectivity in public preview, allowing customers to provision private, high-speed links between AWS and Azure through their respective cloud networking services. The initial preview covers regions including Northern Virginia, Northern California, Sydney, and Frankfurt. Microsoft Azure

Why does this matter?

Because the hard part of multicloud is often not running workloads in two clouds.

It is operating the network between them.

A managed interconnect can reduce the amount of custom infrastructure teams need to build and maintain for cross-cloud traffic, especially for hybrid application architectures, shared data services, and AI workloads that span providers.

But there is an important caveat:

Simpler provisioning does not remove architecture responsibility.

Your team still owns:

  • IP planning and route isolation
  • Failure-domain design
  • Egress-cost control
  • Identity and service-to-service authorization
  • Encryption at the workload layer
  • Observability across both clouds
  • Clear decisions about which data should cross the boundary

The practical takeaway:

Use managed connectivity to reduce plumbing—not to avoid designing the network.

The most resilient multicloud environments will still be the ones with explicit routing, tested failover, bounded blast radius, and clear ownership.

The network between clouds is becoming easier to create.

It is still your job to make it safe to depend on.
